On Thursday, February 25, 2021 the Guadalupe County Republican Women will present a program featuring the Fort Sam Houston Memorial Services Detachment. This Honor Guard of dedicated service members volunteer their time to perform military honors at funerals for United States military veterans at Fort Sam Houston National Cemetery in San Antonio. The Detachment has been selected by the Guadalupe County Republican Women as their community outreach charity and all donations collected at the 2021 meetings will be given to help the honor guard with the purchase of uniforms, operational expenses and maintenance on WWII M1 Grand rifles used in the salute.
The luncheon/meeting will be held at the Seguin Silver Center at 510 East Court Street beginning at 11:30 am. Lunch is available by making reservations with Glenda Layton by calling 830.391.3979 or email@example.com by Friday, February 19. The program is free but if you plan on enjoying a delicious lunch, the cost is $10 or $12 at the door.
The Memorial Services Detachment will feature a color guard, a flag folding and presentation, and a video presentation of their services. The history of the Detachment relates to the 1980’s when due to a shortage of active duty military personnel, expenses and a growing number of military veteran interment services, the Department of Defense reduced the honors available for full military burial. A group of San Antonio volunteers set about planning and training to provide military burial honors to military veterans at Fort Sam Houston at no cost to the families of deceased veterans.
In addition to the Memorial Services Detachment, Peter Salas representing Senator Donna Campbell’s office will give members an update of state issues and take comments and questions back to the Senator.
